Tip 1: Show them the goal posts
All too often, the objectives of the project get lost in the whirlwind of work that seem to take place. As soon as you have hired your core project team, take a moment to pause and reflect on the objectives that have been set. Get your team together and explain upfront, the objectives for the project, the timescales and major deliverables ahead.
Tell them about the hurdles they will face and how to overcome each one. And let them know how you intend to lead the project, your managerial style and your expectations of them. In this way, they know as a team what they are have to achieve and how you fit into the picture.
Tip 2: Set the yard sticks
Take each and every member of your team aside, and explains to them clearly, what it is that you expect from them. Make sure that they have a clear Job Description and that they know exactly how you are going to measure their performance using the online project management templates.
Ask them how they best like to be managed, what motivates them and what you can do as their manager to support them in their role. And don’t forget to ask them what they expect of you, as the leader of their project.
Tip 3: Give them slack

Everyone is motivated by different things. You need to know “what motivates” every different member of your team. Get to know them well. If you can reward each person with something that motivates them (rather than just “shouting a round of pizza” for instance), then you’ll improve their performance every time.
