Tip 1: Show them the goal posts

All too often, the objectives of the project get lost in the whirlwind of work that seem to take place. As soon as you have hired your core project team, take a moment to pause and reflect on the objectives that have been set. Get your team together and explain upfront, the objectives for the project, the timescales and major deliverables ahead.

Tell them about the hurdles they will face and how to overcome each one. And let them know how you intend to lead the project, your managerial style and your expectations of them. In this way, they know as a team what they are have to achieve and how you fit into the picture.

Tip 2: Set the yard sticks

Take each and every member of your team aside, and explains to them clearly, what it is that you expect from them. Make sure that they have a clear Job Description and that they know exactly how you are going to measure their performance using the online project management templates.

Ask them how they best like to be managed, what motivates them and what you can do as their manager to support them in their role. And don’t forget to ask them what they expect of you, as the leader of their project.

Tip 3: Give them slack

Once you team know what’s expected of them and how you’ll measure them, give them the slack to perform. Only by giving them a little room, can you truly assess their performance. When the pressure turns up in your project, give them more room rather than less. It’s hard to do, but you mustn’t over-pressurize them or their performance will reduce, rather than improve.

Tip 4: Count the goals

Measure their performance on a regular basis, at least monthly. Meet with them formally, to discuss what they have achieved, what is outstanding and how they can improve. Make sure you don’t “bottle up” your concerns. Instead speak to them openly —but make sure you’re constructive at all times.

Tip 5: Be positive

If you’re stressed and wary, ease off on your staff. Shouting or being negative will only rub off on them. It’s incredibly difficult, but you need to be positive, reassuring and supportive at all times—even if the project is delayed.

Tip 6: Shake hands and pat backs

It’s easy to get “lost” in a project by forgetting to praise your teams successes. When you deliver a great quality product, finish a difficult task on time or get great feedback from a customer—congratulate them! Your team want to feel good about what they’ve achieved, and it helps you all to relieve stress for the road ahead.

Tip 7: Meet at half time

Bring your team together on a regular basis to help build a “team spirit”. Try and get them socializing together, so that new friendships are formed. The stronger the bond your team have, the more likely that they will work together as a single cohesive unit and achieve the objectives set .

Tips 8: Take time out

Don’t be afraid to move staff between roles, give staff time off and praise staff by giving them “days in lieu”. By taking time out, they will stay healthy, reduce sick leave, improve their morale, produce deliverables faster, make less mistakes and be even more motivated to work.

Tips 9: Give them what they need

Everyone is motivated by different things. You need to know “what motivates” every different member of your team. Get to know them well. If you can reward each person with something that motivates them (rather than just “shouting a round of pizza” for instance), then you’ll improve their performance every time. This is the hardest trick in the book, but the one that pays the biggest dividends.

Tip 10: Celebrate your wins!

Staff all too often finish a project and move straight onto the next one. Without celebrating success and taking time out, they carry that stress and pressure into the next project they work on. To help your team to “start afresh”, celebrate your success. Allow your staff to take time out between projects to recuperate and build the strength needed to perform at their best for your next project initiative.
